Kootenay Local Agricultural Society is a not-for-profit volunteer organization dedicated to strengthening sustainable agriculture in our region of the Kootenays in British Columbia, Canada. KLAS was founded in 2008 by a few like-minded farmers who wanted a simple and inexpensive farmer-to-farmer certification for ecological, regenerative, "earth-friendly" agriculture, which grew into the Kootenay Mountain Grown certification system. They also recognized that this was only a small part of the picture, and a society was needed to gather ideas and funds to build knowledge, capacity, and markets for local farmers. Through projects like the Tool Library, practical workshop series, the Growing in the Kootenays farming guides, and more, the founding members wanted to strengthen and support the entire network of local, sustainable agriculture and all the related businesses in our region.
